What is DataInsight?
Well, the overall line of thought behind the idea is data. Though, Semco Maritime is not the new Google, we do share the same belief as Google; that we can utilize data to the benefit of people and especially our clients. When we bring energy to shore, data is the foundation for availability and even for sustainability.
Datainsight is a small piece of hardware, a tiny computer even, that serves to collect and harvest data from existing systems and instrumentation offshore from our clients’ assets. Now, harvesting and storing data is not necessarily what creates value for the asset owner. It is rather using the data to extract valuable and meaningful insights into different areas of interest such as operational efficiency, decreasing O&M cost, or sustainability.
Data Science turns harvested data into meaningful insights
‘Data Science’ is a field of study that combines domain expertise, programming skills, and knowledge of mathematics and statistics to extract meaningful insights from data. Data science practitioners apply machine learning algorithms to numbers, text, images, video, audio, and more to produce artificial intelligence (AI) systems to perform tasks that ordinarily require human intelligence. In turn, these systems generate insights can be translated into tangible business value.
In Semco Maritime, Data Science rests on our comprehensive experience with engineering, constructing, and maintaining offshore assets and then we brought the Semco Maritime Innovation department into the mix.
We harvest data to improve predictability and reduce O&M costs
With DataInsight we systematically harvest data from existing instrumentation and utilize these data as input to trained Machine Learning models to predict anomalies. The concept of ‘Anomaly Detection’ is the centerpiece of ‘Predictive Maintenance’ – challenging the existing maintenance plans and restructuring campaigns to save equipment and logistics cost.
Predictive maintenance is a highly complex process of probabilities and experience and sometimes even a direct challenge to equipment warranties. As an asset owner or operator, it takes courage to challenge the maintenance regime required by a manufacturer to remain eligible for warranties and compensation in case of breakdowns. DataInsight anticipates anomalies and the harvested data can be essential in forensics – e.g., post-mortem analysis where high-fidelity data can shed light into developed situations.
Linking predictability with sustainability
We also wish to link predictability with sustainability. With clever use of data, we become better at avoiding failures and hence we contribute to the reduction of resources spent on maintenance and supporting functions – for us sustainability is a part of engineering for availability.
